Well the Columbus, Ohio police say they will continue to investigate the case until she tells them in person that she is dropping the charges. The woman told a TV station that she would do that, but didn't tell the police in person (she spoke to them by phone).
Assuming that that is the end of that, what happens to Shelden Williams?
We expect that his scholarship to Duke will be honored under current circumstances. The primary reasons are as follows:
- Coach K has three daughters, not to mention a wife. For those of us with daughters, we have little time for rapists, and it is impossible not to see our daughters as the victim.
- For years, Krzyzewski has talked about relationships as the key to his coaching. He has generally done a great job picking appropriate people, though he might have regretted a few (Maggette, Price, Newton, and Moore, possibly). This sounds cynical to some people, but it's how things work at Duke. The team is based on a military model, and trust is more important than talent.
- Krzyzewski has certainly spoken to Williams by now. He'll have to decide whether or not he believes him. Our guess is that he does. If he doesn't, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
We have heard absolutely nothing to indicate that Shelden Williams will not be at Duke in the fall. It's always possible for things to change, but as of now, so we wouldn't bet the rent money, but we would bet the food money: he'll be enrolling in the fall.
