Local QB Prospect Drawing Interest

While Carl Johnson moves from the recruiting spotlight with his verbal commitment to Florida, his teammate, Kevin Atkins, has seemingly taken his place.

Atkins, a 6-foot, 210-pound quarterback from Durham (N.C.) Southern, jumped onto the recruiting radar after solid combine performances at the MSL, Scout.com, Nike, and Shrine Bowl combines. Atkins consistently ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.7-4.8 second range and showed the strength of a lineman with as many as 24 repetitions of 185 pounds.

"I think I've been doing pretty good [in combines] – I guess my stock is rising," said Atkins. "A lot of coaches have started to recruit me hard after the combines, but no new schools have really came in – except ECU."

N.C. State, Clemson, Duke, Wake Forest, East Carolina, and Notre Dame are the main schools that have picked up their recruiting efforts.

While waiting on that elusive first scholarship offer, Atkins has established a top three.

"I just like Clemson, [N.C.] State, and Duke," said Atkins. "I just like the atmosphere [of those schools]. State has a really good program. I've been to Clemson twice, but when I visited I really liked the campus. And Duke is real close to home and they have a real good education, and have a good coaching staff."

Atkins is also strongly considering Wake Forest, but wants to visit the campus before including the Demon Deacons among his favorites.

This summer Atkins will get an opportunity to check out Wake Forest during their senior camp. He also plans to attend camps at Clemson, N.C. State, and, Duke.
