For the third consecutive day, Duke has added a name to their 2006 recruiting class. The latest Catron Gainey, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety from Hephzibah (Ga.).
"He did commit to Duke
this morning," said Hephzibah High School head football coach John Bowen. "He was getting some looks from Vanderbilt, [Georgia] Tech, and some of the service academies. None of them have offered, but he went to some of the camps and they wanted him to call back in the next week or so.
"It just seems to be a good fit for him. He's a good student and a great football player."
The Blue Devils' coaching staff is recruiting Gainey at defensive back, but Bowen feels he has the potential to fill in at many different positions depending upon how he progresses.
"He needs to work on initial quickness, but he has very good speed and great range," said Bowen. "I can even see him growing into a linebacker."
Duke received pledges from three-star tight end Brett Huffman and two-star offensive lineman Mitchell Lederman on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
