Duke University has been home to 28 All-Americans, eight of which have been named national player of the year – Dick Groat, Art Heyman, Johnny Dawkins, Danny Ferry, Christian Laettner, Elton Brand, Shane Battier, and Jason Williams. Jim Sumner is the curator of sport at the North Carolina Museum of History, located in Raleigh. He is the author of A History of Sport in North Carolina, Separating the Men From the Boys: The First Half-Century of the Carolina League, and numerous magazine and journal articles on North Carolina sports history. He also writes a Duke sports history column for Blue Devil Weekly. Sumner and his wife live in Raleigh.
