Devils Snag First 2007 Commit

After taking a large number of prospects in the class of 2006, Duke is left with a limited number of scholarships available in the class of 2007. The lack of available grants has led to a slow spring as far as commitments went. Until now.

The wait for a commitment prompted many Duke supporters to wonder aloud about the direction of the recruting class. However those calls for commitments have been silenced as Xavieran Brothers standout DE Eriks Reks has become the first commitment in the rising senior class.

Sources close to the situation confirmed Reks' commitment to Scout.com on Friday afternoon. The decision came down late Thursday night.

"Coach roof was really excited when I told him. I had talked to Coach Azzinaro and he wanted to get me a chance to talk to Coach Roof. I think we were both really excited."

Reks previously told Scout.com that his relationship with current Blue Devil quarterback Zack Asack played a big role in his interest in the program, as did a unique role proposed by head coach Ted Roof and his staff.

"They are talking about me playing outside linebacker for them," Reks said in early May. "I've never played that position, but I think I could learn it. I'm a pass rusher right now, and I do pretty well in that situation. I'd need to continue to improve my strength and quickness though."

Reks measures 6-foot-5 and tips the scales at 225 pounds. He's been clocked at 4.75 in the forty yard dash.
