Sumlar, who showed up at the Blue Devils' one day camp and quickly stole the show on the track when he ran three straight sub 4.5 forties, picked Duke over offers from Akron, Wyoming, as well as interest from some of the SEC powers in the region. And he says it's rock solid.
"I believe your word is your bond, and I am committed to Duke. I am going to stay committed to Duke. I did a lot of soul searching and spiritual questioning of myself before I made this decision, but I've now made it and I am happy with it."
And it is safe to say the Blue Devils are happy with him.
As a junior, Sumlar rushed for nearly 700 yards on 90 carries. However, he's expecting bigger and better things for his final season at Orange Park.
"My goal is to have the kind of season that proves my doubters wrong. Some people don't respect our team and the level of football we play. I hope to prove them wrong this season."
Sumlar is the first recruit landed by new runningbacks coach Charles London.
