USA Wins Gold; Future Devils Shine

The USA Men's U18 Team (4-0) simply had too many offensive weapons and played too much defense for Argentina (4-1) as it rolled to a 104-82 victory to take the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men at Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas.

Several future Blue Devils including Lance Thomas, Nolan Smith, and Taylor King played big roles in the US's drive to the championship. Joining the Duke bound trio was the top prospect on the Duke recruiting radar, Kyle Singler.

***QUOTES***
Taylor King

Can you talk about the gold medal game?
All week long, we stressed coming together as a team and working hard, and that's what we did. I feel like on behalf of the team, that we played as well as we can.

Can you talk about the gold medal game?
We realized that they couldn't stop us down low, so we gave it to Spencer and Mike, and they took control. And with the help of Jonny Flynn and his defense, and all the guys contributed as well, and we just went on a run and didn't look back.

Kyle Singler

How does it feel to have accomplished your goal and won a gold medal?
It feels good, a lot of hard work paid off. From day one this was our goal and to accomplish it just feels good. Something special.

Can you talk about the gold medal game?
It was one of the those games that you just like to play. We didn't really have a good game until this one and it was a fun game to be in. Argentina played well and fought to the end. It tested our character a little bit. We had to dig in a little deeper and come together as a team a little more.

What will you take with you?
The memories, I mean we spent three weeks together. I think most of the stuff is off the court stuff. Just being around the guys. Great guys, great coaches.

Nolan Smith

Can you talk about the gold medal game?
If we were up 20 the whole game, it wouldn't have even been fun. But the fact that we had to play hard the whole game, that made it a lot funner. We just stepped up, took our game and our chemistry to a whole new level. That took a lot of effort from everybody on the team. We're all teammates forever now.

What will you take with you?
I had the opportunity to play with so many great players. It was fun.

What was the most fun?
Winning. Winning and playing as a team.

How did it feel when you were on the gold medal, hearing the national anthem?
I felt like Michael Jordan, or Larry Bird or somebody up there. It was amazing.

Lance Thomas

Can you describe your team's chemistry?
We really gelled. It was hard when guys were getting chipped off. I think with 16 players left we all got really close, and it was hard to see four guys go. As a group we did pretty good and we stuck together. The end result was a gold medal.

What was the most fun?
Getting to hang out with guys that I'm going to be going to school with like Taylor King, Nolan Smith. It was fun to be around them and see their work habits.
