Several School Like Samardo

While there is some conjecture that Samardo Samuels may not have the upside of other post players in his class, the rugged Jamaican continues to attract a high degree of interest, with a handful of elite programs poking around.

Before Samuels' Metro Hawks bowed out of the playoffs at the Main Event at the hands of Kostas Koufos and the King James All-Stars, a gaggle of coaches took a peek at Samardo, including North Carolina's Roy Williams in the Koufos clash.

The list of those monitoring Samuels is an impressive one. "North Carolina, Duke to an extent, UConn, Rutgers, St. John's, Miami, Florida, Georgetown, Louisville," said the soft-spoken Samuels. "I don't want to leave anybody out."

Samuels is somewhat used to these high-profile match-ups, given the stature of his prep school program at St. Benedict's and his stints at venues like the Nike Camp, NBA Players Camp, and the Nike Skills Camp in the last few months.

Samuels reports that he and Coach Danny Hurley have been working on his shooting and post moves. Looking toward his upcoming season with St. Benedict's, Samuels will be expected to lead by example, in the mold of a former teammate.

"Coach Hurley wants me to be a player like Lance Thomas," said Samuels. "And to do the things that Lance did last year. He made players do the right things in practice. His teammates feed off of his energy."
