Drummer Shines In Scrimmage

DURHAM, N.C. - Quarterbacks Marcus Jones and Thaddeus Lewis combined to throw for 196 yards and Ronnie Drummer added a 70-yard touchdown run to highlight Duke's 100-play football scrimmage on Saturday evening at Wallace Wade Stadium.

The Duke defense recorded two turnovers as cornerback John Talley registered an interception while linebacker Charles Robinson recovered a fumble. In addition linebacker Michael Tauiliili recorded two tackles for loss and defensive end Patrick Bailey chipped in a pair of sacks.

Working with the first unit, Jones hit on 10-of-16 passes for 72 yards as Lewis directed the second team and completed 10-of-20 throws for 124 yards. Raphael Chestnut led all receivers with six grabs for 81 yards while rookie tight end William Ball had four receptions for 69 yards.

On the ground, Aaron Fryer had 35 yards and one touchdown on eight attempts while Clifford Harris gained 27 yards on 12 carries and found the end zone twice.

Kicker Joe Surgan successfully converted all three of his field goal opportunities with boots of 19, 33 and 34 yards.

Duke will host the annual "Meet the Blue Devils" event on Sunday at 1:30 in the Yoh Football Center next to Wallace Wade Stadium. The Blue Devils open the 2006 season at home against Richmond on September 2 at 6 p.m.
