Tech Stomps Duke; Blue Devils Fall To 0-11

Georgia Tech rushed out to a 28-0 lead before cruising to a 49-21 victory over Duke

ATLANTA, Ga. - Georgia Tech, ranked 18th nationally, defeated Duke by a 49-21 score in ACC football action on Saturday afternoon in front of 46,768 fans at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

On the game's opening snap from scrimmage, Duke's John Talley intercepted a Reggie Ball pass to give the Blue Devils possession at the Georgia Tech 19 yard line. Duke was unable to capitalize, however, missing a 27-yard field goal attempt. The interception marked Talley's seventh of the year and the 18th of his career.

On their next possession, the Yellow Jackets marched 80 yards on six plays and Tashard Choice's three-yard touchdown run with 9:50 left in the opening period gave Georgia Tech the early lead.

Following a Duke turnover, Georgia Tech used a 10 play, 67-yard drive to take a 14-0 lead when Ball found Calvin Johnson in the end zone on third down and goal from the Blue Devil 10 yard line. Johnson's ACC-leading 12th touchdown catch of the year came on the first play of the second quarter.

With 5:51 remaining in the second period, Ball hooked up with James Johnson on a 37-yard scoring pass to push Georgia Tech ahead, 21-0. Georgia Tech then forced a fumble, and the Yellow Jacket offense went 26 yards in two plays for a 19-yard scoring pass from Ball to Calvin Johnson, extending the lead to 28-0 at the 4:52 mark of the quarter.

The Blue Devils then took the ensuing possession and put together a five play, 82-yard scoring drive that resulted in a 13-yard pass from Thaddeus Lewis to Tielor Robinson. The drive was highlighted by Raphael Chestnut's three receptions for 46 yards.

Georgia Tech scored on its first possession of the second half, driving 53 yards in three plays for a 20-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Bennett to Greg Smith. The Blue Devils took advantage of a turnover by turning Adrian Aye-Darko's first career interception into a 47-yard scoring pass from Lewis to Eron Riley. The touchdown came at the 6:42 mark of the third period and cut the Tech lead to 35-14.

With 2:04 remaining in the third quarter, Bennett found Smith for a touchdown covering 25 yards in the air to make the score 42-14. The scoring drive, which covered 26 yards in two plays, was set up by a Yellow Jacket interception. Just over four minutes into the fourth period, Ronnie Drummer scored on a 23-yard run to cap a six play, 95-yard drive for the Blue Devils. A 43-yard pass from Lewis to Riley spearheaded the drive.

Jamaal Evans capped a 10 play, 83-yard drive with a 21-yard touchdown run to give Georgia Tech a 49-21 lead with 4:49 left in the game.

Lewis completed 19 passes in 32 attempts on the afternoon for 237 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Chestnut hauled in a team-best eight passes for 81 yards. Codey Lowe led Duke defensively with a game-high eight tackles.

For Georgia Tech, Ball finished the game by hitting on seven-of-13 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns. Choice carried the football 18 times for 118 yards and one score.

Duke closes out the 2006 campaign at home next Saturday against North Carolina. Kickoff is set for 12 noon.
