We spoke with Nelson, and his father Brian, this past weekend in Houston at the Kingwood Classic. Nelson is still in the very early stages of his recruitment, so he didn't have a lot to say about his recruitment. He told us his father and high school coach have been handling the recruitment, so he wasn't really too aware of which schools have been in touch.
"Coach Howland and Coach Daniels of UCLA came to my school last week," said Nelson. "I also talked recently with Coach Olson of Arizona."
We asked Brian Nelson about the schools that have been showing the most interest in his son to date.
"UCLA has been very persistent and so has Cal," said Mr. Nelson. "We also spoke with Arizona recently."
We asked Mr. Nelson if Reeves has started to form a list of schools yet.
"I asked Reeves at the end of last summer to write down a list of ten schools that he thought he might be interested in," said Mr. Nelson. "I didn't even look at the list, but put it in an envelope and put it away. At the end of this summer, I'm going to have Reeves make another list of ten schools. Then we're going to compare the two lists and go from there. I don't really want Reeves to have to deal with the recruiting stuff just yet. He's just a kid and I want him to just go out there and play."
We asked Reeves if he has given any thought to his recruitment.
"Not really," said Nelson. "I haven't really been thinking about it. I do think I'd like to stay on the West Coast. I'm very close to my family and friends."
When asked if early playing time was a big issue for him, Nelson replied, "Not really. I'd like to play, but it's not a big deal."
Nelson said he doesn't anticipate a decision anytime soon.
"I'll probably decide by the beginning of my senior year," said Nelson.
Nelson is a very good student and told us he has a 3.6 GPA.
