"There's a Polish connection, I must say," Czyz joked. "It would look bad if I said no to a Polish coach."
Czyz went from unranked to a Top 100 player after a strong showing with the Las Vegas Prospects during the Cactus Classic last May.
"Like I said before, when I was going to take visits, I was going to see which school felt better for me," Czyz told Scout.com. "I took the visits and I felt this was the right place to be at. I thought in the long run I'd be successful at Duke."
Czyz felt Mike Krzyzewski would put him in a position to succeed and felt comfortable entrusting his basketball future to the Olympic coach and Hall of Famer.
"The main thing is Coach K," Czyz said. "I really believed in everything he said. He just thinks that I have a chance to be special and so do the assistant coaches. I really like the coaching staff and everything there was organized and professional. Every time I would spend time with those guys they'd tell me what I did wrong and what I did good. They told me how much I can improve."
A versatile athlete and ball handler, Czyz's ability to run the floor, rebound and play at the rim will be welcomed in Durham. Czyz attended Reebok U where he made the all-star team. He then traveled with his AAU team in July before venturing back to Poland and completing his visits.
