Quotes: Duke vs. Miami

The Blue Devils met the media after falling to the Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon in Miami

Head Coach Ted Roof

On the call to go on fourth down...
"That was a heck of a football game and Miami is a very good team. We felt like we had an opportunity to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, and that's why we went for it. We pushed all week long that we were going to coach to win and play to win, and a 47 yard field goal into the wind I didn't feel real good about, so we elected to go for it. It didn't make it, and they answered with a 10 point string after that. It was an extremely hard fought game of football, and Miami is a good football team. I think we made a lot of strides. Look at where we were the last time we came down here compared to now, there's a big difference. But at the same time, we have to find a way to win."

On the Miami defense...
"They have done it to every team they've played, except for Oklahoma. Look what they did to Texas A&M. Texas A&M was the 20th ranked team. It's no surprise that Miami is good up front. They have been good for a long time and they are good now."

On running the ball in the third quarter...
"That is the best we have run. I thought we did a good job because our whole plan was to keep the number of plays even, and at half time they were right about even. When the game finished out, they were about the same. Previously, we were averaging about 20 more plays on defense than what our offense had been playing."

Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis

On the last drive...
"We came out, and we made some plays and executed. Then, we came down and had it all on the line. It was us against them, and they made a great play."

On Miami's defensive linemen...
"You know it's tough in the ACC once you get down to the middle of your schedule in the ACC and you know you are going to face big linemen all week, so you have to suck it up and go out there and play to the best of your ability, and those guys did that."

On his receivers...
"You know nobody is going to be wide open, unless someone made an error or mistake. But you know there are little windows you got to take advantage of and get the ball out there and trust your receivers that they are going to make a great play."

On getting a rhythm...
"Definitely in the whole game we never lost the rhythm. We know there are ups and downs and shifts of momentum in the game. The guys handled it well and when the guys went up we never quit and kept fighting."
