Florida Safety Is Newest Duke Verbal Commit

On the heels of the Sean Renfree announcement, Duke football fans were riding high. That ride continues on Tuesday night as another recent prospect has turned into the latest verbal commitment for the Blue Devils.

Despite battling with a torn ACL during his junior season that forced his recruitment to slide a bit, Panama City Florida prospect Jordon Byas still managed to earn the attention of some high major programs including offers from Mississippi and Clemson. On Tuesday night, however, Byas committed to the Blue Devils.

"They kind of came in late, but they were very aggressive and really made me see that Duke is the best fit," said Byas of his decision. "I've already had an injury that cost me a season, and with the Duke education I know that if going pro doesn't work out, I'll be set for life."

And, over the next four or five seasons, Byas will complete what is quickly becomming a banner recruiting class in the defensive backfield with top notch commits such as Matt Daniels, Donovan Varner, and Randez James all joining the 6-foot-1, 190lbs Byas.

"All of the players the coaches are bringing in can run. Coach Cutcliffe talked about wanting to have speed on both sides of the ball, and I think I fit in with that."

And does the latest commitment of the night have a message for Duke fans?

"I believe we are going to win at Duke and soon. The coaches really are driving that feeling, and we're going to make it happen."

Byas has not been evaluated by the Scout.com recruiting experts to this point.
