Smith didn't play AAU ball last month and he's not going to hit the national stage again until the Nike position camps and then the LeBron James Skills Academy in July. Call us intrigued and interested, just like the rest of high-major basketball coaches across the country.
"He's not the same Roscoe Smith," the player's father, Brian Smith, told us earlier this week. This edition of Roscoe Smith averaged 23.6 points, recorded 12 double-doubles and was named all-metro as a sophomore!
This is the guy college coaches quietly visited during the April evaluation period and many have made a priority recruit in the Class of 2010.
"He's getting a lot of high-major interest in him," Smith said. "North Carolina, Roy Williams, saw him (Tuesday). He's been offered by Florida State, Maryland and Georgetown. North Carolina, Duke, Connecticut and Kansas are showing a very high interest in him.
"He hasn't been on the AAU circuit because he's preparing for the SAT. He hasn't been on the circuit yet but he'll go to the Vince Carter Academy in June and LeBron James in July. He's doing a lot of workouts to prepare himself to be a great ball player."
So far, through the various coaches we've spoken with, there's little reason to think April interest won't materialize into May offers. He's just working hard and preparing. If you throw his name out to those coaches, they'll tell you. He's been getting nothing but high-major schools interested. "The rest say they're all going to offer him (at some time). Each coach is different, some are slower. Bill Self said he's going to offer him."
Smith's father is intent on helping his son improve. The plan was less traveling team ball, more emphasis on individual improvement.
"A kid has to prepare and get better. You can come out on the circuit every year but not get better. Roscoe's path is to develop his skills to become a college player on and off the court. That's the path he's on right now. I know he's shooting the three ball and he can run the point, two or small forward."
The big timers know who Roscoe Smith is and they understand where to find him. It's only a matter of time before he's the next "hot" name in recruiting circles. That is to say, if he isn't already!
