One on One With Nick Russell

Over the weekend TDD sat down with one of the hottest names on the recruiting trail - Arlington (Tex.) Grace Prep standout combo guard Nick Russell. The 6-4 Russell continues to be a prospect the Blue Devils are heavily targeting. Read on for the full story.

TDD: It seems like you've vaulted into national prominence over the last few months. How have you adjusted to the increased attention?

Nick Russell: I think I've been handling it really well, I mean, my parents have really helped me with handling all the attention, it's not that bad right now.

You've got a lot of big time schools in Texas and other places in the Midwest who are actively recruiting you, do you feel pressure at all to stay in Texas for your college choice?

I mean, yeah, there's always people who want me to stay in state, but that doesn't mean I'm not looking at going out of state either.

Being a rising senior, are you in the process of setting up any visits?

Yeah, I mean, I'm trying to set up a visit to Duke at some point over the summer, I really want to check out the campus, I've already visited Texas and Texas A&M before too and Oklahoma as well.

Playing with your AAU team, you play a pure point guard role, is that the type of role you want to play in college?

Yes sir, I do want to play the point in college, that's what I'm working towards.

What kind of system are you looking for in terms of college?

I really want to play with a couple of big men if I can, I like the idea of feeding the big man the ball. I guess you can say I like a traditional style of offense, but I can do anything.

Not a whole lot has been said about you in terms of your recruitment, did you grow up with like a favorite school or anything like that?

Well, I always liked Duke growing up, I watched a lot of their games on TV. I really liked Chris Duhon when he played at Duke, I watched how he played quite a bit, he was a great player.

Speaking of Duke, that's a long way from Dallas, TX. How does that potentially impact your view of Duke?

Well, of course my mom wants me to stay home, but they both really like Duke, they are one of the schools outside of the Midwest both me and my family really like a lot.

Seems like Duke occupies a special place for you, why do you feel so strongly about them?

Well, Coach Collins and Coach K are just really nice guys, they've sent me a lot of handwritten mail, just stuff about the school and Olympics coming up, they just seem like really nice, down to earth coaches. I like them a lot.

Duke seems to have ramped up their interest quite a bit recently, what's the approach they are taking with you?

Well, with the Olympics coming up this summer, they told me they really want to get me on campus for a visit at some point, so, we're gonna try and get that worked out. Other than that, they have just been telling me about the school and the new workout facility they have, which sounds amazing.
