Usually a prospect with such an impressive list of school pursuing him wouldn't surprise you with which school leads. After all, most have been routine participants in January Bowl games. But, when you quiz Hubbard on which program he values above the others you may be somewhat surprised.
"Duke is my clear leader at this time. They are definitely number one for me. Right now I don't really know what any other program could do to knock them off the top spot."
Having visited Duke earlier this summer, Hubbard says his relationship with the coaching staff - especially his recruiting coach, Marion Hobby, makes the Blue Devils the odds on favorite for his signature come Signing Day 2009.
"Coach Hobby and Coach Cutcliffe are two guys who really know how to treat a recruit. When I was there they treated me like a king. I've been to the other programs and nobody made the kind of impression on me that Duke did. I email coach Hobby weekly just to check in and talk about things. I like the way the coaches run the program. They've all been in the NFL in some form and they know how to make a football program run the right way. Coming in to that program I have a chance to make history and really be part of a turn around. I like the way they are pitching things to me."
At nearly 6'5 and weighing in at 250lbs, Hubbard reports a personal best forty time of 4.59 seconds. With such versatility and strength he says he's being pulled in different directions by the Blue Devil staff - something he finds flattering.
"Coach Hobby is talking about me running out as a big tight end or on the O-line, but the defensive coordinator is talking about me coming in and playing for him. I really don't have a preference either way - I just want to come in and play early and make an impact."
Heading into his senior season, Hubbard says he's ready to concentrate on football before scheduling his official visits.
"Right now I'm looking forward to us getting back on the field. I think we're going to be pretty good this year. After the season I'll take a few officials and then I'll be ready to make my decision. Probably around November or December."
