Mississippi Athlete Talks Duke Offer

Oak Grove standout Jay Hughes picked up offers from Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Tennessee before Valentine's day. This past weekend that trio became a quartet when the Blue Devils of Duke extended an offer.

"I have four offers now," said Jay Hughes. "Duke faxed me an offer Friday afternoon to the school. I had been hearing from them. I have talked to them before. They told me they had been watching my film. They are not sure what position I will play. They are going to take a look at me and decide later."

Another offer may soon be on the way.

"I think UAB may be close to offering," said Jay. "I talked to Coach Callaway the other day. He had e-mailed me and gave me the address to send my highlight tape."

Hughes has the versatility to make plays on either side of the ball. He reports he is not married to any particular position. He simply wants to fit in and help his team.

"I like running back, but I want to play whatever is going to get me on the field soonest," said Hughes. "I think I am pretty good at getting the ball around the corner. I think I am a good coverage guy too. I can keep up with people."

With so many early options to consider, Hughes reports he has no clear cut favorite.

"None of the schools really stand out right now," said Jay. "I am going to just wait and see what happens."

Hughes plans to attend Junior day at Mississippi State.
