Junior WR Is Has Duke In Early Top Four

Mason Thomas is confident in his abilities, but from talking to the young man from Virginia Beach, Va., you can also tell that he understands there is a lot of hard work ahead to earn an athletic scholarship. We spoke with him on Thursday about how his summer went and what schools are showing interest.

Kempsville High School wide receiver Mason Thomas runs a 4.49 40-yard dash and measures in at 6-foot, 185 pounds, giving schools a nice size/speed combination to consider when looking at him as a future member of their team. We spoke with him this week about which programs are showing him significant interest.

"I camped this summer at North Carolina, East Carolina and James Madison and went to a passing tournament at Old Dominion," Thomas said. "Duke, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Virginia are the four schools that have been talking to me most right now. Towson is also a school I hear from."

"North Carolina went really well," Thomas stated. "There were about 50 guys playing receiver and I think I was in the top five for all of the receivers there. The coach actually thought I was a rising senior and kept me after with the best of the best for an extra practice, so it was great getting that compliment that they thought I was good enough to be a senior."

"I liked it there a lot. It is really nice down there and I didn't realize how close Duke was to it. The campus is really nice and it looked like they were remodeling their field and putting some new stuff into it. They were improving the facilities as well and I thought the coaches seemed pretty cool too."

"ECU was good as well and their weight room was absolutely amazing," Thomas explained. "They had great coaches and the players were very helpful walking us through things. It was a three-day camp and I thought I did well, but I dropped a few passes I'd like to have back."

North Carolina invited Thomas to go see them play against Miami which he'll be doing with his father. He will also be sending Vanderbilt a highlight tape of what he's done so far as a junior soon.
