"I want to wait and see if anyone else offers," Whitmire said, who at one point claimed to have offers from Duke, Wake Forest and Stanford.
"I don't hear from Wake or Stanford anymore," he admitted. "But Duke may be coming back. They got a commit from a kid but he changed his mind."
Whitmire says he's been discussing taking official visits to Western Carolina and Marshall in December, but hasn't scheduled anything yet.
"I don't really know a lot about either school," he said.
"Western Carolina is recruiting me the hardest," he said. "They're calling me regularly and are saying how much they really want me. They said that I can play early too.
"I'm still learning about them," he said. "But the coaches seem cool."
Whitmire admits he doesn't know a lot about the Thundering Herd either. "I haven't been there and I wasn't really looking at them earlier," he said. "They seem like a good program. The coaches are nice and they've offered me, so I'm definitely interested."
Although neither South Carolina nor North Carolina are recruiting him, he's already attended several Tar Heels and Gamecocks games this season. "It's been a long time since I've heard from UNC or SC," he said.
Spartanburg High School is 2-4 and Whitmire has around 70 total tackles. The Vikings will have their hands full on Friday, Oct. 16 as they travel to Mauldin to take on the 6-1 Mavericks.
Whitmire reports a 3.3 core GPA and took his SAT during the summer. "I forgot the score," he said. "But I'm taking it again." He says he's planning to retake the test in November.
