Singler Named Preseason ACC POY

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference held its annual Operation Basketball media day at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro on Sunday with the media naming Kyle Singler the preseason ACC Player of the Year and picking Duke and North Carolina first in the 2009-10 preseason poll.

Singler received 19 votes as preseason player of the year, four more than Maryland's Greivis Vasquez. Singler, a junior forward Medford, Ore., was also selected to the preseason All-ACC team. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2008 and earned second-team all-conference honors last year as the Devils won the ACC Tournament title for the eighth time in the past 11 years and the 17th time overall.

Last season, Kyle Singler averaged 16.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He reached double figures in scoring 34 times with 20 or more points in 11 contests. He also had nine double-doubles on the year.

Singler was joined on the preseason all-conference team by Vasquez, Trevor Booker (Clemson), Ed Davis (North Carolina) and Malcolm Delaney (Va. Tech). Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors was tabbed as preseason ACC Freshman of the Year.

Duke received 25 of the 48 first place votes, the most of any team in the conference. The Blue Devils' 545 total points tied with North Carolina for the top spot. The Blue Devils won or shared the regular-season title in seven of the 12 previous seasons in which they were predicted to do so.

Duke will open the 2009-10 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 when they host UNC-Greensboro at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
