The offense will be under the direction of redshirt sophomore Sean Renfree who began Fall camp as the team's entrenched started and remains as such heading into week on. The news at quarterback comes at the back-up position where true freshman Brandon Connette has leapfrogged Sean Schroeder. Given Duke's offense and history, it's likely the true freshman will be on the field at times against the Phoenix.
At running back there's another change as sophomore Desmond Scott has been named the starter over junior Jay Hollingsworth. Patrick Kurunwune and true freshman Josh Snead are expected to round out the rotation in the backfield.
Wide receiver remains static with Conner Vernon, Donovan Varner, and Austin Kelly being named the three starters. The top three backups are Tyree Watkins, Josh Trezvant, and Tony Foster. Redshirt seniors Brandon King and Brett Huffman are the top two options at tight end with JUCO transfer Cooper Helfet as the backup. Huffman is listed as the starter.
The offensive line has four starters back from last year with Kyle Hill at left tackle, Brandon Harper at guard, Bryan Morgan at center, and Brian Moore at right guard. There has been a change at right tackle, however, with redshirt freshman Perry Simmons beating out junior Jon Needham.
Redshirt freshman offensive linemen have made several moves along the two deep with John Coleman earning a spot on the second team at left tackle, Joey Finison getting the nod at left guard, and David Harding as the second team right guard.
The defensive line which has switched to a three man front, has seen a change at right defensive end where Kenny Anunike gets the starting nod over fifth year senior Wesley Oglesby. Charlie Hatcher will be the starting nose guard - backed up by Curtis Hazelton, while Patrick Egboh will start at left defensive end in front of Justin Foxx.
The four linebacker spots have seen one change from the preseason depth chart as August Campbell and Kevin Rojas have flip-flopped at the WLB slot. Joining Campbell on the first team is Damian Thornton (SLB), Abraham Kromah (MLB), and Adam Banks (Devil).
Cornerback will see preseason favorites Chris Rwabukamba and Ross Cockrell earning the starting gigs backed up by Johnny Williams and Garett Patterson. The starting safeties remain the same from the preseason depth chart with Matt Daniels and Lee Butler getting the nod while being backed up by Jordon Byas and Walt Canty meaning the top four safeties have experienced no change over the course of fall practice.
The starting kickers are not surprising with Kevin Jones and Will Snyderwine getting the starting gigs for punting and field goals. Senior Nick Maggio, however, will be handling the kick-offs.
The return game sees a pair of running backs handling the duties as Kurunwune and true freshman Juwan Thompson will be receiving kicks. And when the Blue Devils receive punts it'll be a pair of defensive backs as Johnny Williams and Lee Butler are listed as the two returners.
