Former DU Signee Higgins Headed to WAC

As originally reported by's Brian Towey, former Duquesne commit Johnny Higgins signed with New Mexico State on Friday following his visit to the WAC campus the previous weekend. For DuquesneSports take on this news ....

Johnny Higgins, a Baltimore, Md. area native had signed with Duquesne in November 2007 during his second season at Notre Dame Prepatory School in Fitchburg, Mass. Higgins played with current Duke Damian Saunders at the prep school in 2006-07 under current DU assistant coach Bill Barton.

Higgins also considered Quinnipiac before deciding to join the Aggies.

According to Towey, "Higgins' relationship with (NMSU rising sophomore) Jahmar Young, another Baltimore native and Notre Dame alum, played a role in his decision." Aliquippa's Herb Pope is also a second-year player at State.

Higgins told reporter Jason Groves of the Las Cruces Sun News, "We (he and Young) have been playing together since I was 14 or 15. When we played, I was the point guard and J.Y. was the 2." Higgins' father, Melvin Bartee, told Groves that Johnny was never excited about playing in Pittsburgh but wanted to continue playing for Coach Barton.

With Shawn James and Kojo Mensah's departure for pay ball and signee Ali Djim's expected next stop a prep school, Duquesne has four more scholarship slots available for the 2008-09 season.

The spring National Letter of Intent signing period ends this Wednesday, though recruits and schools can contract via an "Institutional Letter" after that date and prior to next school year.
