Freshman Tricia Mullen, the Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Co-Rookie of the Week, led the Red and Blue with 17 kills, sophomore Amy Palko recorded 17 digs. junior Jessica Artman had seven blocks and junior Chelsea Tillotson had setup 54 assists. All were game-high numbers.
With Tropical Storm Hannah drenching the Maryland - Baltimore County (UMBC) campus, Duquesne gutted out a hard-fought first set win, 25-23. UMES, which never led in game one, had different plans for the second set. Down 19-16, UMES scored the next five straight, then won four of the final six points for a 25-21 victory that tied the match at 1-apiece
Duquesne was up 7-2 in game three. UMES got to within three, 14-11, only to see a Mullen kill start an 8-2 Duquesne run that led to DU's 25-17 set victory.
UMES's last lead in the fourth game was 3-2. Freshman Brittany Poling hit two straight winners to give DU its first lead, 4-3. UMES did cut the deficit to 18-16 only to see another Mullen winner stop their run. Game four went Duquesne's way, 25-20.
Christine Edwards had 14 kills and 15 digs for UMES (2-3). Christina Estebane recorded 43 assists and Thonya Josephs had six blocks.
The Dukes close out this weekend's event at 5:00 p.m. Saturday when they face host UMBC (4-2).
