Dukes Equal Best Start Ever

Duquesne University's volleyball team stopped a three-game skid Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Division I independent Chicago State in this season's final non-conference match. The win puts the Dukes' record at 10-4, equaling the program's best start ever.

The game scores, at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio, were 25-11, 25-18 and 25-16.

Freshmen took most of the stats: Tricia Mullen led the Dukes' attack with 13 kills, Liz Homan had three blocks and Sarah Svorinic had 24 assists. Junior Amy Palko had 11 digs. Duquesne finished the Kent State Open with a 1-2 record.

Senior Amanda Humphrey was named to the All-Tournament Team. Humphrey finished the three-match tournament with 14 kills, seven digs, three blocks and one service ace.

Two Chicago State players, Mazvita Maziveyi and Hanya Minta, had three kills apiece. Chy Crichton and Jean Keenan each had seven digs. The Cougars are now 0-15.

Duquesne's 9-1 start this season is the best ever. The Dukes were also 10-4 in the 2000 and 2001 early schedules. The program's best overall finish is 18-12 in 2002.

Duquesne opens the Atlantic 10 Conference schedule when George Washington (5-5) visits the Palumbo Center on Friday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes, preseason picked for fifth in the 5-team West Division, has the best non-conference record in the league.
