PITTSBURGH - Duquesne's women's basketball team took to the court for the first time of the 2008-09 season and came away with a 91-44 exhibition win over Team Essence, Saturday afternoon at the Palumbo Center.
Senior Kristi Little led six Dukes in double figures with 19 points and 10 assists. Also tallying a double-double was junior Keri Pryor with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Duquesne jumped to a 31-6 advantage in the first 12 minutes of the contest as all nine Dukes scored. Pryor led the way with eight of her 12 points coming in that span.
The overmatched Team Essence would cut the Duquesne lead to 23 points at the eight minute mark, but would get no closer the rest of the game as the Dukes built a 58-24 halftime lead and cruised through the second half.
Sophomore Kelly Britcher was Duquesne's second leading scorer with 14 points and a game-high five blocked shots while junior Eve Pyle led all rebounders with 11 boards to go with her nine points.
Freshman Alex Gensler, sophomore Samantha Pollino and junior Samantha Thompson each contrbuted 10 points.
Niki Avery, a 5-5 guard from Eastern Kentucky, led Team Essence with 15 points and eight rebounds. Forward Cherise George (Lynn Univ. in Fla.) added 13 points.
The Red and Blue return to the hardwood next Saturday, Nov. 8 as they host Clarion at 2:30 pm in their final exhibition contest.
