No. 24 Panthers Down DU Women, 66-47

The Pittsburgh women's basketball team, ranked at #24 in the nation, defeated cross-town rival Duquesne, 66-47, Wednesday evening in the Palumbo Center on the bluff.

Junior Keri Pryor led Duquesne, which has now lost two-in-a-row after winning their first six games, with a game-high 18 points. Classmate Rachel Frederick had 12 rebounds, tying the game high total. Sophomore Kelly Britcher assisted on four scores.

Wilson Pepper's layup wuth 5:48 remaining in the first half gave Pittsburgh (5-1) a 19-17 lead, an advantage the visitors would not surrender the rest of the way.

The Panthers' 15-4 run stretched a 27-23 halftime lead into a 42-27 advantage with 12:04 left to play. Duquesne cut the lead to 10 points but couldn't get the margin to single digits.

Kate Popevec led three UP double-digit scorers with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sophronia Sallard dished out five assists.

Duquesne shot below par for the second straight time hitting 29.1 percent from the floor but was near perfect (11/12) from the charity stripe. Pitt hit 28-of-64 (43.8%) and outrebounded their foe, 44-34.

In the men's basketball edition of The City Game, Pitt downed DU, 78-51, tonight in the Petersen Events Center.

Duquesne (6-2) takes on another Big East team on Sunday, December 7, 2008, when they travel to Morgantown for a 2:00 p.m. meeting with West Virginia.
