Freshman Joshua Patterson (Bowie, Md.), who scored the game winning goal in Tuesday's 1-0 overtime victory over Niagara, tallied Duquesne's lone marker this evening. Patterson guided senior Ben Horner's deflected shot past MSU goalie Jeremy Clark in the 85th minute of play.
Michigan State, which outshot the visitors, 14-5, got on the scoreboard at 25:22 when Rubin Bega netted Chris Torres' stop of Mark Barone's shot. The Spartams added two more goals in the second half before Patterson's shot ended MSU's shutout attempt.
Torres recorded seven saves. MSU put 10 shots toward DU's net while the Red and Blue tested Clark just three times.
The Dukes return home to Pittsburgh for a 4:00 p.m. match with Saint Francis of Loretto, Pa. (0-1) on Monday, September 7, 2009 at Rooney Field.
