Three Dukes Named to JMU All-Tournament Team

Duquesne sophomore Liz Homan was named the Most Valuable Player of this weekend's James Madison / Days Inn Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Wright and freshman Sara Scheirman was also named to the all-tourney team for the Dukes who took the event title with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Duquesne won the title by beating James Madison, 3-2, Friday night, and Saint Francis (PA), 3-1, and Hampton, 3-0, on Saturday at Sinclair Gymnasium in Harrisonburg, Va.

Liz Homan and Nicole Wright were named to last week's all tournament team at the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational at the Palumbo Center. Sara Scheirman is the current Atlantic 10 Conference Volleyball Rookie of the Week.

The honors team also includes Kelly Turner and Danielle Erb from James Madison (2-1), Shirley Miller of Saint Francis (1-2) and Adriana Vazquez from Hampton (0-3).

Homan finished with a .571 average with just two attack errors. She averaged 9.3 kills, 3.3 blocks and 0.7 digs. Wright averaged 16 kills, 11 digs and one block. Scheirman's numbers were 9.0 kills and 12.0 digs. Senior Chelsea Tillotson averaged 37.3 assists.

Five players hit double digit dig numbers in the win over Saint Francis. Junior Amy Palko had 18 digs, with 16 by Tillotson, 14 from Wright, 13 by Scheirman and 11 by junior Katie Goss. Wright and Homan and 20 and 13 kills, respectively.

Wright had 11 kills and Scheirman added 10 winners in the three-game sweep of Hampton. The freshman led the Dukes with nine digs.

Duquesne (6-1) hosts cross-town rival Pittsburgh (5-2) on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the A.J. Palumbo Center, before heading to their third of four in-season tournaments on Friday, September 11th. The event is hosted by UIC (Illinois-Chicago). Nationally-ranked Michigan State (6-0) and Georgia State (6-1) will join the Flames (2-5) at this event.
