Down 0-2 (18-25, 17-25), the Dukes came back with a 25-15 win in the third and were two points away from forcing a fifth set. Duquesne had the biggest lead in the deciding match was four points (13-9) and led 23-22 only to see UIC score the final three points for the 25-23 victory.
Duquesne headed to their third in-season tournament of the year, winning one and finishing second in the other with a 6-1 record. Then the Dukes took Pittsburgh on Tuesday, 3-2, their fourth straight victory.
Duquesne lost to nationally-ranked Michigan State Friday in their first matchup of the tournament. With the defeat to UIC, DU goes into their third and final game of this tourney with an 0-2 record, 7-3 overall.
Sophomore Nicole Wright led the Dukes with a game-high 18 kills and 11 digs with freshman Sara Scheirman adding 13 kills. Junior Amy Palko had a team-best 12 digs, tying for the game tops. Senior Chelsea Tillotson set up 42 points for the red and Blue, also best in the game.
Unfortunately these good stats didn't result in a win as the Flames had 13 blocks. UIC (4-6) was led by Cassie Sullivan's 14 kills, 12 digs by Taylor Szatkowski, and Jessica Dalke's 40 assists.
Michigan State (8-0) took Georgia State, 3-0, in the second game of the day's first doubleheader.
Duquesne's last opportunity for a W this weekend will be against GSU (6-3) at 6:00 p.m.
