Dillon (SC) outside linebacker Damu Ford received an offer from East Carolina last week. The Pirates were Ford's first offer, Inside ECU Sports spoke with him about it.

Interview transcript

First offer, take me through it. How'd it go down?

"I walked in the gym last Thursday morning and my coach told me that ECU wanted me at the spring game because they offered me," Ford said. "I thought he was joking, my heart dropped. All my coaches and friends congratulated me and it felt great."

What have you heard about ECU?

"I heard they were a pretty good school, my teammate Anthony Blue has an offer from them too. He visited and had nothing but good stuff to say about them, he's committed to Clemson though."

What schools have been talking to you? Do you think more offers are on the way?

"I've talked with South Carolina and Virginia Tech but I'm not sure how close they are to offering me."

What do you plan on studying in college?

"I want to be in the coaching business when I get out of school so whatever classes allow me to pursue that will be fine for me."

Now that you have your offer, do you plan on making your way out to ECU?"

"I plan on coming very soon," Ford said. "I didn't make it Saturday for the spring game because of a funny mishap. I accidentally ended up driving to Greenville, South Carolina; I won't be making that mistake again and should see ECU soon."

Talk about that size you have at 5'11, 240 pounds. What does it allow you to do? Does it affect your mobility at outside linebacker?

"It doesn't affect my mobility at all and I feel as though I can move around really well. I like to take advantage of it on my opponents; I like to think it adds a little more pain when I make my tackles."

How'd this past season go at Dillon?

"We won the state championship so it was great," Ford said. "I had 14 tackles, two for loss, in that game. For the season I had 149 tackles, one sack, two interceptions (both in one game), three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries."

What are you working to improve on this off-season? Are you going to any camps or combines?

"I plan on going to a couple of camps, I want to get more flexibility in my hips and keep building on speed. I went to the Rivals camp in Charlotte (NC) last Sunday; I felt good about my performance there."

What would be your dream offer?

"I would have to say South Carolina," Ford said. "The last two years I've been going to their football games with recruits and have met all the coaches, been in the lockers room and met some players. It's a great atmosphere."

Any interesting hobbies outside or football?

"I played tennis earlier in school but now I just play for fun. I like reading sometimes and really like to hang out with my friends on the team."

When do you plan on committing? Are you going to be a last-minute kind of guy or an early decision?

"I thought about it a lot," Ford said. "I plan on being a mid-decision kind of guy, not last minute but not early. I'm sure I'll know once I get more offers."

Final thoughts

Damu Ford is a big-bodied linebacker with quick feet and the ability to terrorize quarterbacks. His 149 tackles last season is something out of a video game. If Ford performs that well next season he could turn even more coach's heads. ECU is the first to offer this prospect but I'm sure they won't be the last. Damu agreed to call me after he visits campus to let me know how it went.
