Talk about your offer from ECU, how'd it go down?
"(Outside Linebacker) Coach (Duane) Price came out to my school," Cooper said. "He told me that he really liked my film and gave me my offer. He said I was a good fit for their defense, and he liked my coverage skills and how I rush the passer."
Living in Georgia, what do you know about ECU?
"I really don't know anything at all about ECU. I've saw them once or twice last year on TV, but other than that they're new to me."
Now that you have your offer, do you plan on making your way out to ECU?"
"I definitely plan on getting out there to see what it's about, I plan on visiting sometime in June" Cooper said.
What type of career do you want after college?
"I want to be a counselor someday," Cooper said. "I'm still undecided what type, but I want to help people with their problems."
What do you enjoy playing more, linebacker or wide-receiver?
"I really like linebacker because of the the hitting. I'm a physical player and can be a lot more physical in that position, receiver helps me keep my cover skills up."
Did ECU tell you what they want you to play if you sign?
"They said I'd be staying on defense and playing linebacker," Cooper said.
How did this past season at Columbia go?
"We played pretty good as a team, but would've liked to finish better. I stayed focused and worked hard all season, but want to work on consistency. I pride myself in the mental aspect of the game, that's a place I excel."
Have you been to any camps or combines recently?
"I went to Rivals camp and the MVP camp," Cooper said. "At the MVP camp I made the top seven for receivers and made it to the one-on-ones. At Rivals camp I did well in the one-on-ones covering tight ends."
What schools have really been pursuing you?
"I've had a lot of schools after me and should have a couple more offers coming soon. Oregon, Duke and South Florida are all close to offering and I'm still waiting on an offer from Tennessee."
With all these schools after you, have you thought of a top five or top three?
"Louisville, Mississippi State and Tennessee are my top three schools right now," Cooper said. "It could all change with time and visits, it's still early on."
What's a dream of yours?
"I've always wanted to play in the NFL someday. I want to work hard and support my family in any way I can, but to get their someday is definitely a dream of mine."
When do you plan on committing?
"I am going to commit before the summer," Cooper said. "I want to get out and enroll early along with some of my teammates."
Deshon Cooper is a versatile player with a laundry list of offers. He plays on both sides of the ball, but uses his size and strength better at the linebacker position. Cooper has been awaiting an offer from Tennessee. If he gets an offer, it's pretty safe to say he could end up there, but for right now this prospect has plenty of options. His offers include Appalachian State, Georgia State, Kentucky, Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Rutgers, ULM, Vanderbilt, Marshall, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, Tulane, Old Dominion and now ECU. Cooper agreed to let me know if he visits the Pirate Nation soon.
