Lenzen visits ECU

Cardinal Gibbons (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) offensive tackle Erik Lenzen made it out to East Carolina for a visit. Bradley Harwood spoke with him about it.

Cardinal Gibbons offensive tackle Erik Lenzen made it up to ECU Friday June 28 for a visit. The 6-foot-5, 270 pound Lenzen had originally planned to visit around August, but plans change.

"We got there around ten in the morning and met with outside receivers Coach David Nichol," Lenzen said. "He was the only coach there to show me around because other coaches were on vacation. This was the only time my parents could come see the school, which is why we came at such short notice. We talked academics and he (Nichol) answered any questions we had. I was very impressed with the weight room when he took us there, it was beautiful. They were some of the best facilities I've seen. We also met strength and conditioning Coach Jeff Connors and got the scoop on what he does, it seems like he knows what he was talking about. Overall the visit went great."

Last time we spoke, Lenzen had ECU as his top school. He said his visit helped boost his interests in the Pirates even more.

"It definitely improved my knowledge of the school," he said. "I was very impressed with weight room and the stadium. I'm glad I got to make it out there; I didn't have a real picture in my head about the school, but I do now. I had done some research online, but now I know I like the town and I heard they fill the stadium for games. I loved the atmosphere."

Even with the Pirates leading in his interests, Lenzen has other schools that could potentially get him.

"I previously visited Florida International," he said. "I enjoyed my time there, but am looking to visit South Alabama, UMass or Bowling Green soon. I'm still working on what times are best."

Lenzen is back in Florida for the time being finishing up his summer workouts. He would like to make more trips out of state if possible, but it's going to be a busy last month of summer for him and his parents.

"Unfortunately near the end of the summer my parents will have trouble getting off work," Lenzen said. "So this is the only time I had to take an out of state trip. Once we get to the season, I may take an official visit back to ECU to catch a game. I want to see them play Florida Atlantic."

As far as committing goes Lenzen still has his eyes set on the end of summer.

"I'm going to get it over with early on probably late July or early August would be a good time," he said. "I'm still planning on waiting to check out some more schools. I want to get the weight off of my shoulders so I can know where I'm going and have fun with my senior year of football."

The Pirates have a good chance of landing Lenzen. Depending on how his future visits go could determine where he plans on committing. If he chooses ECU, the Pirates will have an athletic offensive tackle who could make a name for himself on the field in future years.
