Opening statement: I'm very proud of our team. We had a really good three-game road stretch. The kids have practiced well all year, we've had a lot of experiences to be able to fall back on as a team and this team does a good job of keeping the ‘coach me' mentality which is what we've been preaching as far as a foundation. Southern Mississippi was a dangerous team coming into today, we knew they'd be athletic. I knew they hadn't won a game, but they have a good coach and watching film he had a lot of good athletes. We knew we had to come out ready to go and we were.
On the play of Shane Carden: I thought Shane was a really good field general for our football team. Last year he was competing for the starting position of our offense, this year Shane is the quarterback of our team. It's a big difference and he did a good job all week.
On the ending of the series between ECU and USM coming to a close: Today was about respect for their program. I've been a part of three items at ECU, a student, a player and a coach. At each of those parts I've competed against Southern Miss. They love their program like the Pirates love our program so we're similar in nature. Their kids are similar to ours, after the game it was ‘yes sir, no sir.' It's a mutual respect and I respect the Southern Miss program.
Junior wide receiver Justin Hardy
On his one-handed touchdown grab: It was actually a run call and Shane had the option to throw it out if the coverage allowed. He has faith in me and I have faith in him to put the ball where it has to be at and I just have to go and catch it. We run fades every day in practice no matter where it is on the field.
On mentoring the young wide receiver Isaiah Jones: I talk to him all during the week and during the game telling him to keep calm and play within himself. He knows what he has to do, so I tell him to just go out there and have fun. You can see the hard work in practice take over.
Senior safety Damon Magazu
On closing the series against Southern Miss with a win: It's always good to get any win, but obviously they've been a great program that is struggling a little bit. They still have the athletes and play hard. I think our team just came out and played really hard today and tried to make a statement after last week – we're still hurting a little bit from that. It feels good to go get the big win today.
On the second bye week of the season coming up: Anytime you get a bye week it's good. You get a little bit of rest and get to get your legs back under you, I think it's good timing. We can make our last stretch to end the season and hopefully get everyone back and healthy.
True freshman wide receiver Isaiah Jones
On his recent success: I have one of the greatest coaches in college football and I'm around a great team. It's all about your environment, if the environment is right it's easier to do the right thing. Justin Hardy and Lance Ray have helped me so much with the on-the-field stuff; Reese Wiggins has also been there for me. They have made my transition so much smoother.
On his comfort level in the offense now compared to the beginning of the season: I'm so comfortable in the system. I think it suits me well and I'm in the right spot. It lets me play fast and not have to think about too much when I'm out there.
