Ruffin McNeill Post-game Comments

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA -- Here are ECU coach Ruffin McNeill's comments following the Pirates' 37-20 Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl victory Monday.

On being doused with Gatorade: "It was very cold. I became very numb, but it was a great numbness."

Thoughts on the bowl victory: "The first thing I thought about was the kids and the group of young men that came together and decided on a vision and a goal at the beginning of the year. We fought for it, understood the process, worked hard and shot for the sun and the moon.

"We fell short of a conference championship, but we made a lot of other things happen along the way. We got a bunch of star along the way. I'm very proud of them and to be able to do that, it taught our young men something that while having a great attitude … you can accomplish a lot of things."

On the trick-play touchdown: "It's called the "Cam" play. (Offensive Coordinator) Lincoln (Riley) has had it in there for a while and played with it, but I like all our trick plays … They had good coverage and Shane (Carden) went up and made a grown-man play because Shane is a grown man. He made that play in double-coverage like he's been doing it for a long time."

On snapping the school's bowl drought: "It's all about the players. It has nothing to do with me at all. My next Christmas gift and thrill will be to go into the locker room and pray … and sing the fight song as a group and to see the smiles and looks in their eyes and coaches eyes and tell them I love them and I'm proud of them.

"I'm proud of the program because when the players win, the program wins. And when the program wins, the University wins and I'm just blessed to be a part of it all. Then of course, we have the greatest Pirate Nation, family, who are second to none in the country. It's the day before Christmas and a lot of you folks drove down to see us and support us, it's humbling, I'm proud, but not surprised."

On performance of the seniors: The seniors are the core. The seniors are the foundation. I talk about the core of our leadership team and they are in the middle of our corps and I'm proud of them. They are selfishly unselfish as a group and they think about the team first. I'm proud and honored to be associated with the seniors, I'm very proud of the plays, and they made plays when they had to and won the game for us."
