This contributed to his team making it to the quarterfinals of the playoffs and landed himself an All-State selection.
The ECU Pirates took notice of Smith's talents early this season and extended him an offer in October.
"(Outside receivers) coach Dave Nichol gave me my offer," said the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Smith. "It meant a lot hearing it come out of his mouth."
While ECU has been on Smith's trail, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have pursued him most of late. There's a chance the bowl season will affect his interest since ECU beat Ohio 37-20 in the Beef O' Brady's Bowl and Minnesota lost a nail-biter to Syracuse 21-17 in the Texas Bowl.
As of right now, Smith's top schools are Minnesota, ECU and Southern Mississippi. He has offers from all three schools, but did mention he really likes the Pirates' coaching staff.
"I love (ECU's) coaches," said Smith. "They make me feel comfortable about being around them for the next couple years of my life."
Visits will likely be the deciding factor in Smith's commitment. He already visited Minnesota on Nov. 22, but has yet to visit ECU.
January will change that. Smith plans to take an official visit to ECU with hopes of giving him a bit of clarification as to where he will end up playing college football.
"I plan on making a decision shortly after visiting ECU on the January 17th," said Smith.
Smith also holds offers from Appalachian State, Jacksonville State, Samford, Savannah State and South Alabama.
