After an impressive sophomore season cornerback Mark Gilbert has been receiving interest from more college programs. N.C. State, Florida State, Georgia Tech, UNC Chapel Hill, Duke and ECU have been sending mail to Gilbert and offers could soon follow.
Duke, UNC Chapel Hill and ECU have been communicating with Gilbert most and each have been interested in hosting him for a visit.
ECU is a program Gilbert has been paying attention to.
“ECU is building a real good program,” said the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Gilbert. “I saw their wins against Virginia Tech and UNC and was very impressed. I have some game invites from there and will be making a visit to ECU in the near future.”
Gilbert has regularly covered the top receiver on opposing teams this season for Terry Sanford week in and week out. ECU defensive coordinator Rick Smith is usually a fan of the style of defensive back Gilbert plays and if the Pirates offer it could come from him.
“I like to play man-to-man coverage,” said Gilbert. “My goal each game is to line up against the number one receiver and shut him down.”
Gilbert could receive his first Division I football offer seemingly any day now. When asked about which schools he thinks could be the first to offer he named Duke and UNC.
This season should bring about even more attention for Gilbert from college coaches. If all goes well him and his teammates will win their conference and make a run at the playoffs, he mentioned it all depends on how hard they work.
