Reactions To The Hail Mary Catch

East Carolina football lost a heartbreaker last night on a last-second hail mary touchdown. Inside ECU Sports spoke with players and coaches for a reaction to the play that ended the game.

Head Coach Ruffin McNeill:

“We mistimed it, we had guys back deep, but it was a mistiming of the jump by our guys. We’ve worked on batting that down, but mistimed the jump. We’ve been on the other side of this before in that game against Tulsa a couple of years ago. That one play is not going to define this team, I won’t let anyone allow that to define this team. What this group of seniors has done is not going to be defined by that play. This is one of the toughest losses I’ve had in 34 years because these kids have done everything that I’ve asked.”

Quarterback Shane Carden:

“I’m in disbelief after that, its tough. For us as seniors we played such a good game coming back, kept fighting, kept believing, but ended up short. It’s hard, this is our last game in (Dowdy-Ficklen), it’s hard since we fought back and had an opportunity to win. There’s going to be a lot of disappointment, a lot of anger and it will be a tough one to get over, but we have to. We have one more game to give it all we got.”

Kicker Warren Harvey:

“An ending like that is tough, it hits you right in the heart. UCF fought well obviously and it came down to the last second and unfortunately we weren’t on the winning side of it. This is a strong team, we have a strong group of leaders even some that aren’t seniors and now we have to put this behind us and focus on a bowl game.”
