Report: Chris Mangus Dismissed from Program

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Virginia Tech transfer running back Chris Mangus highlighted the trio of ECU players dismissed from the team on Saturday afternoon.

Sixth-year ECU coach Ruffin McNeill announced that Virginia Tech transfer running back Chris Mangus has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules after the team’s spring game on Saturday afternoon.

Mangus, who had a 48-yard touchdown run in ECU’s first spring scrimmage, was expected to be a part of the Pirates’ extended rotation of running backs this fall until the news was reported first by Daily Reflector reporter Nathan Summers.

“I love Chris, but it was a violation of team rules,” said McNeill, whose comments were brief on the subject.

In addition to Mangus, senior offensive lineman Will Foxx and freshman defensive end Markel Winters were also dismissed from the program. Wintera was one of the players suspended in the fall after shooting BB guns near a school

Earlier in the spring, McNeill parted ways with tight end Darren Dowdell — marking the first of now four dismissals just in this spring alone. Newly promoted offensive coordinator Dave Nichol shined more light on McNeill’s discipline policy after Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Coach (McNeill) is a second-chance guy ... but at some point, if you’re not going to do what we ask you to do, you’re not going to be here,” Nichol said. “It’s a shame and I know he’s not a bad dude at all. It’s a good example for the rest of the players too.”
