AAC Week 1 Roundup

All 12 American Athletic Conference teams were in action during week one. In total, AAC teams lost just three of those games. Here's everything you need to know about the first week and what to look for in Week 2.

Who won?

UCONN beat Villanova, 20-15.

Navy beat Colgate, 48-10.

Temple beat Penn State, 27-10.

Tulsa beat Florida Atlantic, 47-44.

ECU beat Towson, 28-20.

USF beat Florida A&M, 51-3.

Memphis beat Missouri State, 63-7.

Cincinnati beat Alabama A&M, 52-10.

Houston beat Tennessee Tech, 52-24.

Who lost?

UCF lost to Florida International, 15-14.

Tulane lost to Duke, 37-7.

SMU lost to Baylor, 56-21.

Best win?

Temple soundly beating Penn State only helped raise the American’s status as one of the best Group of Five conferences. However, those who follow AAC teams closely probably weren’t entirely surprised by Temple’s victory. The Owls are one of the better teams in the conference this year and will surely vie for a conference crown with the likes of UCF and ECU facing significant losses. Defeating a Big Ten team is no small task however and will perhaps put the other conferences on notice.

Best player performance?

Tulsa receiver Keevan Lucas had a career night, hauling in 10 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns. His performance, combined with quarterback Dane Evans, helped propel Tulsa to a three-point win over FAU in one of the most exciting games of the weekend. If the first week is any indication, the junior receiver is going to be one of the conference’s best moving forward.

What’s next?

(all games on Saturday 9/12)

USF plays at Florida State.

HOUSTON plays at Louisville.

UCONN hosts Army.

TULANE plays at Georgia Tech.

ECU plays at Florida.

MEMPHIS plays at Kansas.

SMU hosts North Texas.

CINCINNATI hosts Temple.

TULSA plays at New Mexico.

UCF plays at Stanford.

Game to watch?

Cincinnati and Temple is set to be a fun one and narrowly edges UCF and Stanford, in my opinion. The conference implications of this game are what makes it a must-watch. Temple and Cincinnati are both eyeing a conference championship and both looked impressive in their first game of the season. The quarterback matchup of the Bearcats’ Gunner Kiel and Temple’s P.J. Walker is sure to be an exciting one as well. You can catch this game on ESPNews.
