Williams Commits to ECU

Class of 2016 point guard Shawn Williams commits to ECU.

Shawn Williams, a point guard from Southwest Christian Academy (Maumelle AR), has verbally committed to play basketball at East Carolina. Williams was at the ECU football game against Towson and talked to coaches and players from the basketball team.

Williams was hosted by BJ Tyson for his official visit. When talking to Tyson, Williams was told that they could do good things at ECU. Before he went to the football game on Saturday, Williams was able to scrimmage with some of the players.

“We were running through everybody,” said Williams. “It was cool to possibly be playing with my future teammates. I thought I was going to be rusty, but I was like Steph Curry. I couldn’t miss.”

Williams is motivated to put on more muscle and get bigger during the off-season. As of now he is benching 225 but hopes that he can max at 250 soon. On the court Williams wants to average a double-double his senior year.

The basketball season for Southwest Christian Academy starts in October. Williams is hoping he can win a championship for his school that he has transferred from twice.

“I want to average a double-double,” said Williams. “I left the school twice and I told everyone I’m staying and they want me to get a ring. I told them in ninth grade that I was going to get them a ring. So I’m going to get them one this year.”

Williams is the second recruit to verbally commit to ECU. The other commit, Elijah Hughes, is also a guard. Williams also had Arizona State, Rhode Island, Tulsa and Louisiana Tech in his top five.
