Current, former players speak out on Montgomery hire

Former and current ECU football players spoke with IES about Ruffin McNeill, Scottie Montgomery and more.

Kicker Davis Plowman

On having a younger coach:

“I think that’s going to be pretty awesome. Especially considering that he played in the (NFL). He knows everything about all of the stuff going on in the team and he’s going to do a great job being active throughout practice, running around and yelling at people. I know I’m excited.”

On talking to Montgomery’s former players:

“I haven’t (talked to anyone yet) but I’m going to talk to Duke’s kicker and ask him about it.”

On the themes of the players’ meeting with Montgomery:

“Consistency, discipline, and character.”

On what kind of coach he will be:

“I think he’ll be an awesome coach. He’s really intense and that’s something that I really like in a coach. He’s someone that will motivate you to be your absolute best 100 percent of the time.”

On when he knew Montgomery was the right fit:

“As soon as he walked in the door. He was real loud saying this is how it’s going to be, let’s get it and get to work.”

On seeing someone other than Ruffin McNeill walk through the doors:

“It was strange but after this first one we’re going to get used to it. It’s hard to replace coach Ruff but after that first emotional week and half you find out the new coach and it’s like well, it’s over, Ruff isn’t going to be here. You have to get your mind wrapped around it and prove yourself again and get to work.”

Punter Worth Gregory

On the meeting with Montgomery:

“It was good. It went very well. He seems like he already fits in with the players and it seems like he’s been here for a while. I think he’s watched a lot of tape and he’s very personable. He seems like a guy that’s going to fit in perfectly with our program and the guys that we recruited and the guys that we already have committed.”

On Montgomery managing the emotions of the team:

“It’s been kind of like a rollercoaster but I think he’s managed it very well. We’ll see in the next couple of weeks because I know there are a lot of guys that are on the fence about what they’re doing and there are recruits that I don’t know if they’ve announced if they’re staying. It’s going to be a big couple of weeks.”

On the overall impression of Montgomery:

“I think a lot of guys are psyched to get back out on the field. It was kind of like motivation this morning (during the meeting). We had a couple of leaders there and it’s going to be big whenever we all meet with him next.”

Former running back Chris Hairston

Thoughts on Montgomery:

“He seems like a good guy. He’s hyped up and juiced up about coming in to get the team right. He seems very cool, down to earth and he knows what he’s doing. I’m excited to see how the team does.”

Players’ reactions:

“I talked to some of the players and they seemed pretty happy. They seemed like they could get into him, accept him just like family.”

Reaction on hearing about McNeill’s hiring:

“I was shocked, it was heartbreaking. It’s going to be tough replacing a guy like Ruffin McNeill but they just have to keep moving on, continuing where they left off and building as a whole.”
