Pirates Add JUCO Quarterback

After losing Kurt Benkert, the Pirates have brought in JUCO quarterback Gardner Minshew

Depth issues at quarterback arose after the transfer of  quarterback Kurt Benkert. East Carolina has brought in a new addition from junior college as Gardner Minshew has announced that he has committed to the Pirates. Minshew, a Mississippi native, played at Northwest Mississippi this past season.

As a member of Northwest Mississippi, Minshew threw for 3,288 yards and 28 touchdowns in 12 games. The 6-2 quarterback led the Rangers to an 11-1 season.

Minshew will likely serve as the backup to Phillip Nelson, who competed with Benkert for the starting spot during the spring. John Jacobs, Jason Connella, and Ray Smith are also on the roster but did not participate in the spring Purple and Gold game. Nelson had 231 yards on 13 completions in the game.
