Competition between defensive backs and wide receivers has been strong early in camp for the East Carolina football team.
“Our leaders, Isaiah (Jones) and (DeShaun) Amos, they’re challenging each other,” said head coach Scottie Montgomery. “They’re competing against each other.”
When we spoke to Amos at media day, he seemed to embrace the competition and expressed that neither side of the ball had backed down.
“It’s going great," he said. "There’s a little bit of trash talk and we call each other out sometimes. If the DB makes a play, he’s going to let you know he made a play and get in your ear. Then if Isaiah (Jones) or one of them makes an amazing catch, they’re going to let you know as well.”
Although they’re going against each other every day in practice and things can get heated, Amos knows at the end of the day they’re only trying to make each other better.
“They’ll have a good day and make us better," he said. "We’ll have a good day and make them better. At the end of camp, we plan on being good on both sides of the ball.”
Once they have the chance to line up against someone in another jersey, both sides can work together. However, until then, they’ll be going head-to-head in practice.
“It’s all competition,” said Amos. “Like you hear, iron sharpens iron.”
