East Carolina head coach Scottie Montgomery holds first in-season press conference

Greenville, N.C. -- East Carolina Head Football Coach Scottie Montgomery spoke to the media on this week's upcoming game and the season.

On Monday, head coach Scottie Montgomery held his first in-season press conference to address the season, injuries, practice and the attitude of the team .

"Offensively, we feel like we are ready to play a really sound football game," said Montgomery.

The team looks to go forward with what they have practiced all off-season. This year ,coach Montgomery wants to spread the ball around as much as possible on the offense. Another thing he wants to do this season is run the ball more.

The physicality of the practices during camp has made the team tougher and the Pirates are in good shape going into Saturday's game. Coach Montgomery noted that the team needs to develop a better sense of communication so the offense and defense can benefit.

Defensively, every position will need to have someone step up and take Montgomery noted.

Fred Pressely and Demetri McGill have been standout leaders for the defensive line.

"We are in a spot from a schematical stand point because of our multiple fronts that we can use and utilize linebackers (Dayon) Pratt and Yiannis (Bowden)," said Montgomery. "It gives the team good position flexibility."

The team has showed resilience in the way they have overcome setbacks. Montgomery noted some of the leaders through camp turned out to be Isaiah Jones, J.T. Boyd, Dashaun Amos, and Philip Nelson.

Two players have been added to the injury list and will not dress up -- defensive lineman Demage Bailey and offensive lineman Messiah Rice.

"We have to remain focused on every detail and not leave any leaf unturned and we are going to make sure every stone will be turned over as we move forward because this what we prepared for." said Montgomery.

This Saturday's game against Western Carolina will be the first test for East Carolina.
