Lets take a closer look at what ECU has to do to emerge triumphant on Saturday

As ECU opens up their season tomorrow against Western Carolina, there are a few things that the Pirates will need to pay attention to in order to pull out a victory.

Tomorrow is the day. ECU will officially start the 2016 regular season campaign at 6 p.m. against the Western Carolina Catamounts.

Though the majority of Pirate nation is not stressing over the possibility of losing tomorrows game, there are some "keys to success" that ECU needs to focus on in order to ensure a victory.

The first "key" to success is handling their business on the defensive end.

Western Carolina utilizes a triple-read option scheme on offense, and has eight returning starters. If there is anything Pirate nation knows best, it is the continued shakiness that the defense has had over the past couple of years.

East Carolina will also have to focus on shutting down redshirt sophomore Randall Emerson at tight end, and junior running back Detrez Newsome. Both of which have the ability to turn up field quickly and pick apart defenses.

It is imperative that the defense effectively communicates as a unit, as well as handles their individual assignments with precision.

Another "key" to success is avoiding penalties. It is very hard to win a game when you're shooting yourself in the foot by giving up yards.

With a new head coach, and many underclassman playing, there are bound to be some mistakes, however, it is important to limit the mistakes and the yards given up by those penalties.

A third key to success will be finding a groove on offense. Senior quarterback Phillip Nelson has little game experience and the best word to describe him would be a wildcard; we just do not know what to expect from him.

In addition to a wildcard quarterback, coach Mo will also have to figure out the rotation . In a press conference earlier this month, Coach Mo said he wants to give the ball to the back who believes will be the most physical and efficient in the backfield. He did mention however, that it is important to spread the ball around.
