East Carolina faced off against the Temple Owl's in their final game of the season.
The Pirates could not withstand the endless rushing attack from the Owls and could not capitalize on offensive drives. East Carolina lost 37-10, and finished 3-9 record overall and 1-7 conference play.
The game started off hopeful for the Pirates as they came out on fire after a Shawn Furlow kickoff return for 37 yards to ECU's 42-yard line. The Pirates went 3-3 on third down conversions on their first drive. They capped off their drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Gardener Minshew to Jimmy Williams and took a 7-0 lead.
As for the rest of the game, it was all Temple. The Owls went on to score 27 unanswered points up until the fourth quarter. Temple's offense tore through the Pirates' defense on the ground. Running backs Jahad Thomas and Ryquell Armstead tag-teamed the Pirates, rushing for a combined 187 yards and four touchdowns. Temple's offense did not score through the air, but quarterback Philip Walker stepped up to the challenge when needed.
The Pirates got back on the board with a 41-yard field goal from Davis Plowman, which made the score 27-10. Although ECU's offense had trouble scoring, they were able to move the ball. However, they continuously stalled around midfield. Temple on the other hand nearly doubled the Pirates total yards from scrimmage with 414.
The Pirates will head into next season with a more mature Minshew running the offense. Isaiah Jones ends his season with 158 career receptions, making him the leader in FBS history.
Jones, who finished with 399 career catches, will now be considered as one of the most prolific receivers in college football history.
