ECU holds on to win in first confernece game of the year

Greenville, N.C.-- After the Pirates dominating win over Presbyterian College, ECU looked to keep up the momentum going against South Florida.

East Carolina survived USF's late comeback and held on the win their conference opener 60-49.

The Pirates and the Bulls had nearly identical  stats from the field, three-point line and free-throw line.

Freshman Elijah Hughes came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19 points. B.J. Tyson, Caleb White, and Jeremy Shepard combined for 29 more points to help the team get the victory.

ECU has now had back to back games where they have been able to limit their turnovers.

Could the new small lineup be the key for the Pirates going forward?

One area of concern against USF was rebounding. The Bulls out-rebounded Pirates 47-39.

With the victory, East Carolina moves to 9-5 on the season, with all nine wins coming at home, and 1-0 in AAC play.

The Pirates now must prepare for the next conference game Saturday against SMU who are 11-3 on the season. It will be the Pirates' first big conference test.
