UConn wins at home 72-65 against ECU

East Carolina guard Kentrell Barkley scored a team-high 18 points in Monday's AAC conference game against Connecticut. However, it was not enough, and the Pirates lost 72-65 to the Huskies on the road.

Interim ECU basketball head coach Michael Perry suffered first loss since taking over for Jeff Lebo. The Pirates were able to hold their own throughout the game, but could not take the lead away from the Huskies.

Three starters for the Pirates scored double digits against the Huskies defense. Barkley led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Followed by Elijah Hughes (14 points) and Caleb White (13 points) with active play all over the floor.

All three athletes hit a pair of threes from outside the arc in the game. Jeremy Shepard also came off the bench connected on three three-point shots for the Pirates.

Notable Statistics:

  • ECU kept the game close losing by seven, despite shooting only 37 percent. 
  • The Pirates won the turnover battle 8-12
  • Both teams shot 33 percent from long range
  • UConn outrebounded ECU 37-34

The Pirates are now  9-11 on the season and a conference 1-6 in the conference. Next, the Pirates will face another AAC opponent, Tulsa (11-7), at home Jan. 25 at 7 p,m. East Carolina hopes to end their six-game losing skid with a win over the Golden Hurricanes.
