Monday's Notes

The Wake Forest game may be seen as a moral victory to some East Carolina football fans, but the time has come for this year's team to put together a complete game.

Once again, the Pirates showed signs of improvement in the 34-16 setback at the hands of the Demon Deacons, but turnovers doomed any chance for a victory. Wake Forest turned ECU's mistakes into 17 points, and cruised to the win.

For their part, the Pirates' offense generated some yardage, 167 on the ground, and 224 by air, actually out gaining the Deacs.

Now the Pirate squad must turn its attention back to Conference USA play, hosting the Houston Cougar for a Tuesday night televised clash. The extra time to prepare, and the home field advantage will prove valuable in ECU's quest to chalk up its first win of the season.

Houston will come into the game sporting a 3-1 record, its only blemish a 50-3 setback to nationally ranked Michigan. The Cougars' most recent conquest, a 42-35 win over Mississippi State is not as impressive as it seems; the Bulldogs have not won this season.

Strange as it may seem when talking about a team that is at or near bottom of almost every NCAA statistical category the Houston game could be the opportunity for ECU to turn its season around. The Wake Forest and Miami games give indication that the Pirates do have some ability, and are starting to show some signs of comfort with the new offensive and defensive schemes. What a better opportunity to gain some redemption than at home, on national TV, and against a conference foe?
